BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is described as the process of teaching, training, and learning in order to increase knowledge and develop skills, attitudes, and morals. When correctly channeled, it prepares a person's talent for future rewards in life. In other words, education enables a person to completely develop his skills, prepares him to be a responsible citizen, and provides him with the stimulation and chance to enhance his life culturally. Education not only imparts information and abilities, but it also instills values, trains instincts, and fosters the appropriate attitude and habits. According to Darweli (2016), cultural heritage and values are passed down from generation to generation through education. The primary purpose of education is to guarantee that the child develops properly so that he can fit in and function in society. If education begins at birth and ends at death, suffice it to state that it plays an essential role in the lives of all individuals, and academic success of a school child is a result of how well a child does in school.

According to Ibok, academic performance refers to the highest degree of performance that a child or individual may achieve in school academic activities if parents, school officials, and instructors provide the required support and opportunity (2015). However, a child's academic achievement cannot be explained in isolation from background influences such as family and parent, who are the major agents of social learning.

Significantly, the duty for educating a child is always in the hands of the parents. This is consistent with sociologist's popular argument that education may be used as a tool for cultural change, which is significant in this discussion (Darweli 2016). Children must maintain intimate touch with their parents from birth through maturity. The warmth that only parents can supply provides the child a sense of belonging and attachments, which improves their mental, physical, moral, and intellectual development. If children are deprived of much-needed parental affection and warmth during a critical era in their lives, they suffer in all parts of their lives. It is not unreasonable to believe that parents socioeconomic background can influence children's intellectual ability in school. Whatever influences children's developmental stages may have an impact on their education or attitudes toward it.

Importantly, Eamon (2016) discovered a link between student academic success and parents' socioeconomic status. He went on to say that parents' encouragement of private lessons, provision of learning aids at home, lovely/mental health, provision of balanced diets, and discouragement of exam-malpractice are all important factors in students' academic achievement, and all of these can be obtained through parent level of education, income, number of children catered for, and marital status. According to Ezewu (1983), as reported in Ololube (2016), the socioeconomic status of a family has been recognized as having a beneficial or negative impact on the child's schooling. The greater a family's socioeconomic status, the more probable it is that the child will be motivated to study in school and, as a result, will succeed in learning.

He also added that pupils from high-family families in Nigeria, such as medical professionals, engineers, and politicians, had a higher chance of succeeding than those from low-income families. As a result, a pleasant family life as well as a comfortable home environment are essential for language learning. Family support and assistance keep youngsters on track and aid in the learning process.
